take a pass on this Mar 21, 2009
By Eye Forget I went through 2 of these in less than 3 years. The mainspring broke on both. The frustrating thing is they did not break while in use. I'd reach into the waterproof box it was kept in (heaviest thing in the box was a diesel tank key -- displacement hull does not pound) and they were shot.
The shackle key is way too small for any serious shackle.
Get an Ibberson from England. Including post, its less money and infinitely better built. I now have a knife I can count on. Its bullet-proof and has a shackle key that's useful.

Love it, but it broke:( Nov 26, 2009
By Steak bomb Nice knife. Not to bad to keep in the pocket. The blade opens up slickley by clipping the knife on pocket and grasping blade to retrieve out of pocket. The blade opens right up. Locking marlin spike was great. I miss this knife. I would of given it 5 stars if the spring that held spike didnt brake after a years use. I am an arborist so it did receive daily use. Also the red light would of been much more useful if it was white.
Defective Nov 07, 2011
By reddyteddy I bought one of these knives from West Marine before the June 2008 Newport to Bermuda Race. By the end of the summer it failed while using it and the spring mechanism flew across the deck. I barely used it. I sent it back and they sent me another one and charged me shipping. This one failed too in exactly the same manner - locking mechanism/"spring" broke - barely used it. I sent it back with a letter explaining this was the second knife with the same defect and that I wanted a different knife. No response. I called them up a few months later and found they had moved offices and they said they would look into it...they found my letter and sent me the same knife again. Failure again this summer but this time it failed without use....I left it for a week in a line bag in the cockpit and found that it was broken - again in the same place. This is clearly a defective design or manufacturing defect and they appear to keep sending out the same defective product. I told West Marine and they told me they no longer carry the knives...they sent me a check to compensate me for my horrendous consumer experience. Kudos to West Marine...thumbs down to Myerchin. These knives cannot be counted on period.
Add me to the list of broken mainsprings. Jul 27, 2011

"Mostly Harmless"
It seems like the return spring fails most often
for people who don't use the knife(?)
I got my knife out of my sailing bag this spring
(which is mid-July here in Seattle), and found
that the knife didn't lock when I opened it, and
it didn't snap shut when I closed it. Same for
the marlinspike. I think it's best described as
"Ran when parked".
I sent an email to Myerchin about a week ago, but so far,
have not received any response.
I paid top dollar for top quality expecting to have a
knife that would last the rest of my life (or until
I lose it). Sadly, it failed without even being used
much at all. Mostly I just carried it for safety.
It was a decent knife until it broke.
Now I have a heavy and expensive red LED light.
I suppose I can make it lighter if I detach the useless knife.

Solid well made knife. Light weight for pocket carry. A good substitute for a fixed blade knife if a folder is prefered. 440C steel is high quality. Holds an edge. The red light preserves night vision when used and is adequate for 30 inch use. It is not a pry bar and probably will fail if used for one.
