2Nice show knife, not practical for sailing  Oct 02, 2011 By Wfhogan
I purchased this knife about 6 months ago with the ivory handle.

Pluses: Very well made and balanced knife. Sperate marline spike is tough and provides great leverage for shackle keys. Knife drew a lot of complements and looks of envy from my dock mates.

BUT:

It turned out to be a disaster as a true rigging and daily carry knife:

1) IT IS MAGNETIC. Yup - somewehere in the knife, spike or sheath there is something ferrous. (iron based) I discovered this while carrying it on my hip, and sitting down next to my autopilot.

My boat changed course!

Suspecting the knife I waved it around the pilot's fluxgate compass, and sure enough, it went wild - same with my bulkhead compass. This is totally unacceptable for a knife marketed as "offshore" and could cause thr loss of your boat - or life - due to navigational errors it induces.

The sheath is a bad joke - ballistic nylon with a slippery plastic inner sheath that is hard to see and get the knife in.

The knife slips easily out of it as well, making accidental deployment a CERTAINTY if you fail to get the wimpy velco closure properly seated (just try doing it single handed on a pitching, rolling boat - note to boating knife sheath designers: a sailor only has ONE HAND while on deck for fidling with things - the other hand is FOR HOLDING ON TO THE BOAT.

The after I bought the knife, it accidentally deployed itself overboard and and sank to the bottom of my slip - so I hired a diver to retrieve it.

Remember how I said your dockmates will envy your knife?

Well, a few weeks after I recovered it from Davey Jones, I left it biefly in my cockpit, and it "grew legs" and walked away...no doubt into the locker of one of those dockmates...

No big loss - the knife and spike were also bulky, and the sheath constantly snagged on things.

Beautiful knife ruined by poor supporting details.

I recomend getting a good folding knife, and keeing it on a long lanyard clipped to your pants, and stowed in a pocket.

and make sure its "anti-magnetic" - West Marine sells a truly exceptional one with a locking spike and key for around $30 - you can buy 3 or 4 of these for what my ivory Meyerchin set me back...

4Good combo  Jan 20, 2012 By Mike Jansen
Great knife and good marlinspike. The shackle key isn't the most useful on large gear. I got mine in the leather sheath, which I prefer and everything is made with quality. I think I'll still use my old J. Nowill rigging knife for more abusive tasks, but this Myerchin A200 is still a great fixed blade for ropework and deck tasks. Both knife and sheath have a grommet for lanyards and blade holds and edge well for stainless.

5Excelent Customer Service  Feb 13, 2013 By Bill Hotalaling
The product itself is very nice. But the customer service from the merchant is excellent, could not have asked for better.

5My Working Knife  Jan 31, 2010 By C. Gallagher "Catherine"
Great knife, use it to cut heavy rope and I work on boat rigging all the time. Highly recommend this knife!
