Truly an awesome tool for sailors May 08, 2010

Pros: -Easy, one-handed operation of both the serrated knife and the spike. Muscle memory brings either out and puts it back in without a problem. -Pliers are at the ready. Not for heavy work but perfect for that stubborn shackle. -Serrated blade cuts line fast and easy.
Cons: -A little bulky. -Blade is a little short and I wish there was an option for a straight blade rather than serrated. I must admit that when sailing I need a cheese cutting knife as often as I need a line cutting knife...I know... -The belt clip is big but removable....don't use it..not really a con... -No flat head screwdriver. Seems like it would have been easy enough to add a little length to one of the stainless chunks and have a flat head screw driver function. It could double as a beer opener which is just as important...not that this thing can't open beers. -For some reason I feel like the lanyard attachment is on the wrong end of the knife.
Conclusion: A really great knife at a good price. It replaces my Davis knife I used to carry on the boat. The pliers are invaluable. The blade is sharp and can cut through anything. A few gripes but minor... I can't tell you how many trips in to the cabin this knife has saved me..

The Original Sailor's Tool Aug 23, 2011
By Tobias, Son of Floyd The P300 is an original design concept of John Myerchin of the knife company by the same name. Myerchin was originally an American based company which originally had their knives produced in Japan using AUS 8 Steel. Today the Company's Headquarters is located in Nova Scotia with production occurring in Mainland China. According to their web site they are using 440C Stainless for the blades, however this information is not printed on the knife or the packaging .
The design concept turns the knife handle and marlin spike into an unusual pair of pliers which can be used for loosening boat shackles as well as small bolts and such. The large marlin spike and somewhat short sheep's head blade are both held in the open position with a set of liner locks making this a unique design among rigging knives. Incidentally, the Sheep's Head blade is another Myerchin innovation which added a hump to the back of a sheepfoot blade which in theory make it more difficult to break.
The fit and finish of the knife are quite good. The brushed aluminum handles come in natural, red and blue finishes. The trademark whale appears on the obverse with a detachable belt clip screwed into the reverse handle. The knife also comes with a handy Nylon belt sheath if you're not a pocket clip carry type of person. If you're a boater, I think you'll find this knife will serve your needs quite well. The ability for easy one hand opening and closing of both blade and spike will be a real treat. The same can be said for the liner locking feature on both items.
With that said, Fury makes a knock off of this knife with same admirable qualities and cost much less. So the question has to be why spend 2 ½ times as much for the original Myerchin? As I own both, I can compare them side by side.
What you will see is the Myerchin does have a better fit and finish as well as very useful pocket clip and handy nylon belt sheath. The 440C stainless steel seems to have a better heat treatment which will be more durable and require less sharpening which means it will last longer. It is debatable, however, if it will last as long as two of the Fury knives.
It becomes a debate over cost vs. quality. The added pocket clip and the belt sheath also need to play into the equation. Neither of these items come with the Fury.
Another thing to consider is how often you drop your knife overboard. You won't be nearly as upset dropping a good 10 knife overboard and you will dropping a better $30 knife overboard. If you are prone to dropping your knife, then maybe you should go with two or three Furys. If you've got a better grip, you may want to spend a few bucks more for the original.
In the end I think they are both fairly priced and worth the money.
