Myerchin falls over the quality cliff May 18, 2012
By Dexter I bought this B300 as a replacement for an older A300( the blade lock tang broke off)that gave good service til it broke, The old A300 had a whale etched into the blade, not the new oval logo. I am absolutely dismayed as concerns the lousy quality of the "new" Myerchin B300. after only one week of carry at work, no heavy use at all, both the blade and the marlinspike do not close all the way anymore(already), this thing is now a Maraca. Other things; the notches above and below the heel of the blade are smaller on top and not there at all on the bottom. The lanyard is smaller, lighter and unfinished with rough edges Instead of polishing the bolsters they are now beveled edges and satin brushed finish. The quality of this.......knife....(pos)....is abysmal, reminds me of a brass bolstered Pakistani $2 liquor store knife. Don't buy it, you'll just end up returning it, and soon. The only thing I'm happy about is that I bought it from Amazon and I CAN return it without a major hassle.
A little large for in the pocket but a great sailing knife Oct 20, 2005
By G. Powell This is one of the best sailing knives. About 2x as large and 2x the price, of the kabar, Case XX, Wichard, spyderco rescue or Camillius sailing knives but I really like the feel of it.
Advantages, the marlinspike locks in place so it won't fold back on you when you are working a knot out. The blade also locks so that it won't fold back when you are cutting a line. I prefer the non serrated edge as its easier to resharpen. However for a faster cut through polypropolene lines the serrated blade just rips through.
Disadvantages: Really too large to carry in your pocket, but it does come with a nice nylon belt sheath. When you open the marlinspike it lets the sharp side of the blade loose to travel inside the bolster and can contact the brass pin, thus making a single dull spot on the blade. You'll have to work to make this happen but it can.
Anyway it makes a great gift for your sailing buddies.
