Awesome tool at amazing price Mar 28, 2010
By C. Williams The construction is only moderately good, but for the price this is an exceptional tool. The spike and blade are both perfectly designed for serious ropework, the locking mechanism is easy to use and (at least brand new) seems secure. The pliers sticking out of one end are a little weird, and I'd almost be happier without them, but hey, it never hurts to have one more tool on you. They are fairly effective pliers.

So far So Good, for the price Nov 10, 2010
By Tobias, Son of Floyd In case you weren't aware, the knife is made in China. If you have a bias against knives made in China, then this review is probably not for you. If you are more open-minded, then hopefully this honest assessment of the knife will be helpful.
The knife is a knock off of the more expensive Myerchin P300 Sailor's Tool. (see: Myerchin Knives P300SL Sailors Tool with Silver Handles ) I'm not sure of the steel used but assume it to be 420HC or 440 Stainless.
The marlin spike and blade lock in the open place with liner locks. The pliers are light-weight but should be good enough for breaking open shackles. They are no better or worse than those found on any other multi-tool but are more useful than a shackle key blade.
The sheepshead blade is short and serrated and while very sharp from the factory will be difficult to sharpen unless you know how to sharpen serrated blades. The thumb studs make it possible for one hand opening and if you've practiced a little with liner-locks you'll probably be able to lock in place with the flick of a wrist. The blade is very short but still functional. It'll cut a 1/2 inch line with one swipe thanks to the serrated design.
The marlin spike is a little wobbly in the closed position, a problem I've noticed on numerous riggers. It tightens up when in the full open and locked position. It easily opens with the flick of the wrist. The spike has a good curve to it which, if you're like me will be appreciated. If you like a nice straight spike, you'll find this one annoying.
The quality and workmanship are pretty good. I'm very satisfied with the fit and finish of the knife and it is up to the tasks it was designed to perform. All in all a good economy knife that will get the job done while at the same time, if it falls over-board, you won't cry over the money you spent.
After I've used this a bit more, I may change the review but for now, I'm going to say, "So Far, So Good" (It would be better if it has a glow in the dark handle.)

Surprisingly Jun 13, 2010

This boating tool is a great bang for the buck. Its comfortable to hold as a knife or with the marlin spike. The blade and spike are easy to open one handed and lock. The pilers could be useful and don't interfere in any way. Wish they made a straight blade version. The only thing missing is a screwdriver tool. When its closed it kind of looks like a fish.

Disposable knife Dec 08, 2010
By fatcat1111 I regret buying this. The construction is pretty flimsy. The pin holding the marlinespike to the body is loose and it passes through a 2 mm piece of steel at two points separated by a 1 cm gap, so it has a lot of play. This affects the pliers as well. I can easily imagine the thing buckling under load, quite possibly resulting in an injury. An injury on a 5" marlinspike would be bad.
Also, no belt clip, which means it has to go in a pocket or on a lanyard.
I can't complain, given the price (it's half the cost of the Myerchin P300, the knife it is based on), and the design is quite nice, but if (er, when :D) this goes in the drink I'll spend a little more next time for a better quality tool.
great deal for the price Feb 06, 2012
By tking Just got two of these knives. Very nicely machined. The interesting thing is that I've paid 3 or more times as much for knives that really don't meet the this quality standard. So far I'm very impressed.
